Lucifer – The Fallen Angel by Ricardo Bellver
Few sculptures in the history of art have generated as much fascination, symbolism and controversy as The Fallen Angel (Ángel Caído), the extraordinary masterpiece created by Spanish sculptor Ricardo Bellver in 1877.
Inspired by John Milton’s epic masterpiece Paradise Lost, Bellver immortalised the precise instant when Lucifer, once considered the most beautiful of all angels, is expelled from Heaven after rebelling against God. Rather than depicting a terrifying monster, the sculptor chose to portray a magnificent, youthful and deeply tragic figure whose expression combines pride, rage, suffering and despair.
This extraordinary interpretation transformed Bellver’s work into one of the most expressive sculptures of the nineteenth century and one of the very few monumental public sculptures in the world dedicated to Lucifer.
From Rome to Madrid: The Birth of a Masterpiece
Ricardo Bellver first created the sculpture in plaster while studying in Rome.
Its artistic quality immediately attracted attention, earning the First Medal at the Spanish National Exhibition of Fine Arts. Shortly afterwards, the Spanish Government commissioned a bronze casting that represented Spain at the 1878 Universal Exposition in Paris, where it received international recognition.
Following its success, the monument was permanently installed in El Retiro Park, Madrid, where it remains today as one of Spain’s most iconic sculptures and one of the city’s most visited artistic landmarks.
The Fascinating Legend of 666
Perhaps no other sculpture in Europe has inspired so many legends.
The monument stands at approximately 666 metres (2,185 feet) above sea level, the same number traditionally associated with the “Number of the Beast” in the Book of Revelation.
Was the location chosen intentionally?
No one knows.
Many historians believe the elevation is simply a geographical coincidence resulting from Madrid’s natural altitude, while others consider it one of the most extraordinary symbolic coincidences in the history of public monuments.
Whatever the truth may be, the mysterious connection with the number 666 has fascinated visitors for generations and transformed the Fallen Angel into one of Madrid’s most photographed and talked-about monuments.
A Monument That Has Witnessed History
The monument has stood in El Retiro for almost 150 years, silently witnessing the changing history of Spain.
Careful observers can still find small bullet marks on the original bronze sculpture, scars left during the Spanish Civil War. These traces remain preserved today, adding another remarkable chapter to the extraordinary history surrounding Bellver’s masterpiece.
One of the Greatest Sculptures of Spanish Romanticism
Beyond the myths and legends, The Fallen Angel is universally admired for its exceptional artistic quality.
The twisting anatomy, powerful musculature, dramatic wings and serpent wrapped around Lucifer create an extraordinary sense of movement and tension. Bellver captured the exact moment between divine perfection and eternal exile, freezing one of literature’s greatest dramas forever in bronze.
It remains one of the finest achievements of Spanish Romantic sculpture and one of the most celebrated sculptures ever inspired by Paradise Lost.
