Michelangelo’s Bacchus –, Old Gold Finish, High-Quality Resin Sculpture

At just 21 years old, Michelangelo traveled to Rome for the first time. During the five years he spent there, he completed only two works: Bacchus and La Pietà.

The Bacchus statue was commissioned by banker Jacopo Galli for his garden, designed after ancient models. This drunken, staggering god blends both youthfulness and a subtle femininity. As Vasari described, such a fusion of qualities embodies the Greek god Dionysus. Yet Michelangelo infused the figure with a deeper meaning: in his left hand, Bacchus holds a lion skin — symbol of death — and a bunch of grapes — symbol of life — from which a faun feeds. It is a reminder that life, however intoxicating, is fleeting, and man inevitably meets the same fate as the faun, held in the grasp of death.
