Lucifer – The Fallen Angel by Ricardo Bellver
Few sculptures in history have inspired as much fascination, mystery and controversy as The Fallen Angel (Ángel Caído), created by the Spanish sculptor Ricardo Bellver in 1877.
Inspired by John Milton’s immortal epic Paradise Lost, Bellver chose to portray one of the most dramatic moments ever represented in sculpture: the precise instant when Lucifer, once considered the most beautiful of all angels, is expelled from Heaven after rebelling against God.
Rather than creating a terrifying demon, Bellver sculpted a magnificent and deeply human figure. His body still retains the perfection of an angel, while his face reflects an extraordinary mixture of pride, rage, suffering and despair. It is this emotional complexity that has made the sculpture one of the masterpieces of nineteenth-century European art.
From Rome to Paris… and finally Madrid
Ricardo Bellver first modelled the sculpture in plaster while studying in Rome.
Its extraordinary quality quickly attracted attention, earning the First Medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid. Shortly afterwards, the Spanish State commissioned a bronze casting that was exhibited at the 1878 Universal Exposition in Paris, where it received international recognition before eventually being installed in Madrid’s famous El Retiro Park.
Today, it remains one of Spain’s most celebrated public monuments and one of Ricardo Bellver’s greatest artistic achievements.
The Mystery of 666
Perhaps no other sculpture in Europe has generated as many legends.
The monument stands at approximately 666 metres (2,185 feet) above sea level, the same number traditionally associated with the “Number of the Beast” in the Book of Revelation.
Was it intentional?
No one knows.
Many historians consider it nothing more than a geographical coincidence, since much of Madrid lies around this elevation. Others see it as one of the greatest symbolic coincidences in the history of public art. Whatever the truth may be, this remarkable detail has transformed the monument into one of Madrid’s most photographed, discussed and enigmatic landmarks.
A Monument Marked by History
The monument has witnessed almost a century and a half of Madrid’s history.
If you look closely at the original bronze sculpture today, small bullet impacts can still be seen—silent scars left during the Spanish Civil War. These marks remain preserved as part of the monument’s history, adding yet another remarkable chapter to an artwork already surrounded by symbolism and legend.
A Masterpiece of Romantic Sculpture
Beyond the myths, The Fallen Angel is universally admired for its extraordinary artistic quality.
The dramatic anatomy, the dynamic movement of the wings, the twisting posture of the body and the serpent coiling around Lucifer combine to create one of the most expressive sculptures ever produced during the Romantic period.
Every detail reflects Bellver’s exceptional understanding of human anatomy and emotion, freezing forever the very instant between divine perfection and eternal exile.
