GANDHARA BODHISATTVA – 2ND CENTURY BUDDHIST SCULPTURE
A remarkable encounter between the artistic traditions of Ancient Greece and the spiritual world of Buddhism.
This Gandhara Bodhisattva represents one of the most fascinating artistic traditions of the ancient world: Greco-Buddhist art, a unique cultural fusion that developed in the region of Gandhara, in present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Dating to approximately the 2nd century CE, the original sculpture belongs to a period when Buddhist imagery was profoundly influenced by the artistic language of the Hellenistic world. The naturalistic treatment of the body, the carefully arranged drapery, the refined facial features and the monumental presence of the figure reveal an extraordinary dialogue between East and West.
The figure represents a Bodhisattva — an enlightened being who postpones final liberation in order to guide others on the path toward enlightenment. Unlike the austere image of the Buddha, Bodhisattvas were often represented as richly adorned princely figures, wearing elaborate jewellery, robes and headdresses.
This extraordinary iconography combines spiritual wisdom with a powerful worldly presence.
The original work that inspired this artistic reconstruction is preserved in the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels, also known as the Cinquantenaire Museum, and stands as an exceptional testimony to the cultural exchanges that shaped the ancient Silk Road.
Our artistic reconstruction of the Gandhara Bodhisattva has been carefully developed to preserve the imposing presence, sculptural richness and extraordinary surface detail of the ancient original.
The elaborate jewellery, layered garments, serene expression and complex decorative elements are recreated with exceptional attention to detail.
Each sculpture is individually prepared and finished entirely by hand in our workshop in Spain.
More than a decorative object, this sculpture represents one of the most extraordinary cultural encounters in history: the fusion of Hellenistic artistic tradition with Buddhist spirituality.
MATERIAL INFORMATION
This sculpture is created in solid high-density photoreactive resin, using materials selected for their exceptional precision, durability and ability to capture extremely fine sculptural detail.
Materials of this type are widely used for high-precision artistic reproductions, professional model-making, cinema, theatre, museums and cultural institutions, where surface definition and dimensional accuracy are essential.
We do not use plaster, mineral composites, stone powder or conventional plastic.
The sculpture is produced through a carefully developed process that combines digital reconstruction, high-precision replication and extensive manual finishing.
After replication, every piece is individually cleaned, refined, polished and finished by hand in our workshop.
This process allows us to preserve subtle facial features, jewellery, drapery and intricate decorative details that would be lost with lower-quality materials or conventional casting methods.
The result is a solid, durable and highly detailed hand-finished artwork, created for collectors who value sculptural accuracy and professional craftsmanship.
HAND-APPLIED ANCIENT FINISH
The complex aged finish shown in the photographs is individually created by hand in our workshop.
Multiple layers of colour, patina and subtle surface effects are carefully applied to recreate the visual character of an ancient archaeological sculpture shaped by centuries of history.
Because this is a fully manual process, each piece develops its own subtle variations in tone and surface character, making every sculpture unique.
HAND-FINISHED ARTWORK
Every sculpture is individually finished by hand in our workshop.
The final surface is carefully refined through several stages of cleaning, preparation and manual finishing to achieve the appearance shown in the photographs.
This individual process gives each sculpture its own subtle character and ensures that every piece receives the same level of attention and craftsmanship.
MADE TO ORDER
Each sculpture is individually created and finished to order in our workshop.
Preparation time may vary depending on the selected size and current workload.
We carefully inspect every sculpture before shipment to ensure the highest possible standard of finish and detail.
PACKAGING AND SHIPPING
Each sculpture is carefully protected using reinforced packaging specifically adapted to its shape and selected size.
Particular attention is given to the headdress, jewellery and the most delicate decorative areas.
We ship worldwide from our workshop in Spain.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The photographs show real examples of finished sculptures created in our workshop and accurately represent the finish that the customer will receive.
However, because every sculpture is individually finished by hand, small variations in tone, patina and subtle surface nuances may occur.
These variations are inherent to the artisanal finishing process and make each sculpture unique.
