UGOLINO AND HIS SONS — JEAN-BAPTISTE CARPEAUX

A devastating vision of hunger, despair and the darkest limits of human suffering.

Ugolino and His Sons is one of the most emotionally powerful sculptural compositions of the nineteenth century. Created by the French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, the work draws its subject from Canto XXXIII of Dante’s Inferno, transforming one of the most harrowing episodes of the Divine Comedy into a monumental study of anguish.

At the centre sits Ugolino della Gherardesca, imprisoned in a tower and condemned to die of starvation together with his sons and grandsons. His body is tense and powerful, yet his expression reveals a terrible inner struggle. Around him, the younger figures collapse against his body, weakened by hunger and desperation.

Carpeaux captures not the moment of death, but the unbearable psychological instant before it.

Ugolino bites his fingers as his children cling to him, their exhausted bodies forming a complex pyramid of intertwined limbs. Physical strength and absolute helplessness exist at the same time. The father remains monumental, almost heroic in anatomy, yet he is powerless to save those surrounding him.

The composition was developed during Carpeaux’s years in Rome and reveals his profound admiration for Michelangelo, particularly the muscular bodies and emotional intensity of the Last Judgment. Yet Carpeaux transformed these influences into something deeply personal: a sculpture driven by movement, psychological tension and raw human emotion.

The work became one of Carpeaux’s defining masterpieces and a landmark of nineteenth-century French sculpture. The monumental marble version preserved at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York was executed between 1865 and 1867.

This artistic reconstruction has been meticulously developed to preserve the extraordinary anatomy, emotional intensity and sculptural depth of Carpeaux’s masterpiece. Particular attention has been devoted to the intertwined bodies, the expressions of despair and the powerful contrast between Ugolino’s physical strength and the fragility of the younger figures.

Each piece is individually created and carefully hand-finished in our workshop, resulting in a highly detailed sculptural artwork designed for collectors, lovers of Dante, classical and nineteenth-century art enthusiasts, and exceptional interiors.

A haunting masterpiece of tragedy, love and human desperation.

ARTISTIC FINISH — WHITE MALTA MATTE

Each sculpture is individually hand-finished in our workshop with our signature White Malta Matte finish.

This warm, refined ivory-white finish has been developed to enhance sculptural depth without the cold or artificial appearance of pure white.

Its soft matte surface allows light and shadow to reveal the extraordinary anatomy, intertwined bodies and emotional intensity of the composition, emphasizing every gesture, expression and sculptural detail.

The finish is particularly suited to Ugolino and His Sons, reinforcing the monumental character of Carpeaux’s masterpiece while giving the sculpture the visual presence of a classical museum piece.

Because every finish is applied entirely by hand, subtle variations in tone and surface nuances may naturally occur, making every sculpture unique.
