The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Among all the masterpieces created during the Baroque period, few sculptures have achieved the universal admiration and emotional power of The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s extraordinary marble masterpiece, created between 1647 and 1652 for the Cornaro Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome.
Inspired by the mystical autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, Bernini immortalised the extraordinary moment in which the Spanish Carmelite nun experiences a divine vision. According to her own writings, an angel pierced her heart with a golden spear, filling her soul with an overwhelming experience of divine love. Rather than portraying physical suffering, Bernini masterfully transformed this mystical event into one of the most profound artistic expressions of spiritual ecstasy ever created.
The sculpture perfectly embodies the theatrical genius of the Baroque. Flowing drapery appears to move with supernatural energy, while the delicate expressions of both Saint Teresa and the angel create a remarkable harmony between human emotion and divine transcendence. Above the figures, gilded bronze rays descend from a hidden window, creating a dramatic illusion of heavenly light that transforms the entire chapel into a complete work of art where architecture, sculpture and natural illumination become one.
Commissioned by Cardinal Federico Cornaro, the sculpture remains the focal point of the famous Cornaro Chapel and is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in the history of European sculpture. More than simply illustrating a religious event, Bernini created an unforgettable meditation on faith, beauty, spirituality and the human encounter with the divine.
This museum-quality historical reconstruction faithfully reproduces every fold of the drapery, every anatomical detail and every subtle expression of Bernini’s masterpiece. Produced from an exceptionally high-resolution digital reconstruction and individually hand-finished in our workshop, each sculpture faithfully recreates the extraordinary elegance and emotional intensity that have fascinated visitors for nearly four centuries.
Whether displayed in a private collection, office, library, gallery or refined interior, The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa represents one of the greatest masterpieces of Christian art and one of the defining works of Baroque sculpture ever created.
