€79,95 – €275,00Price range: €79,95 through €275,00 (Inc. Tax)
📜 Description
Exact high-quality resin replica of one of the famous stucco portrait heads of Palenque, traditionally identified with the great Maya king K’inich Janaab’ Pakal I (Pakal the Great), ruler of Palenque between 615 and 683 A.D.
The original, modeled in painted limestone stucco in the 7th century, is preserved today in the National Museum of Anthropology (Mexico City), with close fragments also exhibited in the Palenque Site Museum. These heads once adorned temples and palace walls as dynastic portraits, visible during royal ceremonies.
Key features of this portrait reflect the refined Palenque style:
-
Elongated skull due to ritual cranial deformation, a sign of elite status.
-
Circular earspools, symbolizing jade jewelry and nobility.
-
Feathered headdress (likely quetzal) and the royal diadem (sak hunal), marks of kingship.
-
Naturalistic modeling: parted lips, soft cheekbones, detailed eyelids.
-
This replica shows a green patina (bronze/verdigris effect), while the original preserved traces of red and mineral pigments.
Although these heads bear no inscribed names, their context, attributes of royalty, and chronology allow scholars to identify them with Pakal the Great, one of the most celebrated rulers of the Maya world. Under his reign, Palenque flourished with monumental works such as the Temple of the Inscriptions, where he was buried in 683 A.D. His tomb, discovered in 1952, contained his carved sarcophagus and the famous jade funerary mask.
