Among all the deities of the ancient Greek world, none embodied wisdom, strategy and civilization more completely than Athena.

This remarkable historical representation depicts the goddess at one of the most fascinating moments of Athenian mythology. Beside her appears the sacred cista from which emerges a serpent, a direct reference to Erichthonius, the legendary child destined to become one of the earliest rulers of Athens and one of the most important figures in the city’s foundation myths.

According to ancient tradition, Erichthonius was born through divine circumstances involving Hephaestus and Athena herself. The goddess, unwilling to abandon the child, entrusted him to the daughters of Cecrops within a sacred basket that they were forbidden to open. When curiosity overcame them and they discovered the mysterious child intertwined with serpents, a tragedy unfolded that became one of the most enduring legends of Greek mythology.

Athena stands here as protector, guardian and divine guide. Armed with helmet and shield, she represents not merely military strength, but intelligence, justice and the disciplined wisdom that allowed Athens to flourish as one of the greatest civilizations in human history.

The original composition is traditionally associated with the sculptural traditions of Classical Greece and linked to the artistic environment surrounding Alkamenes during the late fifth century BC.
